What works best for me on this is the primal screaming, that comes in here and there, where it feels more "edgy" than Switchfoot's other music, not that there's anything wrong with it, but what won me over was the intro to this song, when I saw the video on MTV. I like "Oh! Gravity," the title track, but my money's on "Awakening." I hope to hear more like this from Switchfoot. I don't think it's abandoning their roots, I think it's a matter of finding them?
Hope they get great exposure with this, but mostly, I just like "Awakening" in the background, a good wake-up morning song.
Sometimes the sheer sappiness of "Christian rock" with overwrought vocals makes me gag maple syrup tasting hairballs, but Switchfoot has avoided that, which makes for a fine thing for those of us listening. For more:
